For a full day rather than a morning, the catamaran cruise at $109 covers similar ground with time to enjoy it. For value, a three-hour circuit runs $47. Almost every boat trip worth taking in Montenegro happens in or just outside the Bay of Kotor, so the real choice is length and boat type rather than destination.

No — and this is the expectation worth adjusting before you book, particularly if you are arriving from Croatia. Montenegro has very few visitable offshore islands. Our Lady of the Rocks is man-made and open; Mamula, the fortress island at the bay mouth, is passed on most cave circuits; Sveti Stefan further south is a private hotel you photograph rather than land on; and St George, the second islet off Perast, is closed to visitors entirely. There is no archipelago here. What Montenegro has instead is one exceptional bay.

Effectively the whole day — expect to give it seven or eight hours including the return. The full-day catamaran at $109 is not simply a longer version of the three-hour circuit; it is a different proposition, with real time at each stop, a proper swim stop and lunch on the water rather than a scramble back for it. If you have one day in Kotor and want to also see the Old Town or climb the fortress, take a three-hour circuit instead. The full day replaces a day rather than fitting inside one.

Steadier, yes; better, not always. A catamaran handles chop far more comfortably, which matters in the 0.30–0.50 m band that made up about a fifth of high-season hours at the cave in our readings. But a small open speedboat is faster, more fun, and gets into the Blue Cave more easily — larger boats sometimes stand off rather than enter. If the cave interior is the thing you came for, the small boat is arguably the better tool. If you are prone to seasickness or travelling with people who are, take the catamaran.

Kayaking inside the bay from $38, private charters from $462, and day trips inland to Lake Skadar. Kayaking is the closest you get to the water and the best use of a flat calm morning. A private charter makes sense for four or more people who want their own timings, particularly in marginal weather where flexibility is worth more than the saving. Lake Skadar is a different landscape entirely — a large freshwater lake on the Albanian border — and worth a day if you have several to spend.

Roughly May to October, with July and August the warmest and busiest. Outside that window many operators simply stop, and the ones still running are working a colder, rougher sea — our marine readings are from high summer and a winter month would look nothing like them. In peak season the sea sits near 28°C, warm enough that swim stops become the highlight rather than a novelty. Shoulder months, late May and September, are the sweet spot: warm water, working operators, and noticeably fewer cruise passengers at the island.
